Sun releases first integrated portal offering for remote access

A portal is only as useful as its reach, says research group Aberdeen
Johannesburg, 30 Oct 2002

Sun Microsystems has unveiled the Sun ONE (Open Net Environment) Portal Server, Secure Remote Access 6, an integrated out-of-the box alternative set to significantly enhance network identity-enabled portal computing, As the industry's first integrated portal offering, the solution eliminates the additional cost of administration and maintenance that traditional VPN (virtual private network) offerings require.

Using a standard web browser, users can securely access their portal, which includes personalised and aggregated applications, data, Web services and legacy information, from any location.

"A portal is only as useful as its reach, so a secure, trusted portal infrastructure that enables transactions across multiple defined audiences, via the device of their choice, highly elevates the business value of a portal," says Dana Gardner, research director at the research organisation, Aberdeen Group.

"Sun's new remote access offering combines security and identity capabilities with efficient and integrated remote access that reliably extends portal benefits across organisational and supply chain boundaries."

As portals become more widely adopted, so customers want to extend their portal initiatives to their partners and remote or mobile employees.

"With the Sun ONE Portal Sever, Secure Remote Access 6, companies can securely deliver the most requested Web service, namely the ability to communicate and collaborate with employees, partners, suppliers and customers, based on their identities," comments Lodewyk de Beer, consultant SEAME (South Europe, Middle East, Africa) Architecture Strategy Team at Sun Microsystems SA.

The Sun ONE Portal Server provides security and authentication - user policy, single sign-on, and a management console - and serves as the centralised policy server for customer deployments. This functionality centralises the security of companies' Web applications, legacy and portals assets. The SRA solution uses standards-based privacy, security and authentication such as SSL/TLS and cryptographic algorithms such as 3DES/AES to help ensure all communications through the Internet are delivered safely and securely to the server and the client.

Today, over 400 Sun ONE Portal Server customer deployments including Advocate Health Care, AXA Financial, The State of New Jersey and SunTone certified Workscape Inc (http://wwws.sun.com/software/customers/workscape.html) with support from leading systems integrators including MG Solutions and Navidec.
