Sun rewards programmers

Sun Microsystems has announced it will create a reward programme in order to compensate open source programmers for their work, in a hope to boost open source efforts, says Slashdot.

The programme will involve communities like OpenSolaris, GlassFish, OpenJDK, OpenSPARC, NetBeans, and OpenOffice.org, according to Simon Phipps, Sun`s open source officer.

Phipps` post comes months after Rich Green, Sun`s executive VP of software, voiced scepticism over the open source status quo, where developers who contribute to various efforts go uncompensated while corporations are enriched.

SourceForge opens marketplace

SourceForge.net has introduced an online marketplace for technology professionals to buy and sell service and support for open source software, says CNNMoney.com.

SourceForge.net Marketplace launches with over 600 service listings. Some major projects offering service and support include: OpenBravo, JasperSoft, Zenoss, Compiere, Firebird, Nagios and Spring Framework.

The platform, which is tightly integrated into the SourceForge.net Web site, has been heavily tested in closed and open beta cycles since May of this year. Interested buyers can search services by project, or browse general categories of services. Payment is specified by the seller, and may include PayPal, cheque, or credit card.

Ts`o joins Linux Foundation

Long-time Linux and open source programmer and activist Theodore "Ted" Ts`o has been named the new chief platform strategist for The Linux Foundation, says Computerworld.

San Francisco-based non-profit organisation said that Ts`o will work on a variety of Linux technology topics, including the Linux Standard Base standardisation efforts.

Ts`o will also have a two-year fellowship at the foundation, after which he plans to return to IBM, according to the consortium, which is dedicated to fostering the growth of Linux.
