Sun servers provide scalable, stable foundation for leading florist

Johannesburg, 20 Jan 1999

Sun Microsystems has announced that 1-800-FLOWERS, the world`s favorite florist, has selected a range of Sun Enterprise servers, Solaris Operating Environment software and the Oracle database to enhance the company`s extensive order processing system.

Comprised of 150 company owned and franchise stores, catalogs, telephone sales and on-line sales through 1-800-FLOWERS.com and America Online, 1-800-FLOWERS assisted customers with more than 9 million floral purchases last year.

"Our business depends on the ability to serve guests efficiently and reliably, whether they come into one of our stores, call us, or place an order on-line at 1-800-FLOWERS.com," says Chris McCann, senior vice president, 1-800-FLOWERS. "The combination of Sun and Oracle technology gives us both stability and room to expand our order processing operations as our business continues to grow."

The deployment of Sun Enterprise 4500 and 6500 servers, Solaris Operating Environment software and Oracle database (running internally developed order processing software) will support all of the company`s sales channels. The Sun servers and Oracle database replace an existing system the company had outgrown, and was spurred by the rapid growth of 1-800-FLOWERS.com, and a recent restructuring of its Interactive Services Division. The company`s newly re-designed Web site is expected to account for more than 12 percent of the company`s $300-plus million in sales.

"1-800-FLOWERS is a great example of a forward-thinking, multi-channel retailer using Sun technology to take its business to the next level," says Bob DeLaney, worldwide group manager of retailing for Sun Microsystems.

1-800-FLOWERS is taking advantage of the Oracle FastForward program for deployment of Oracle Financials on Sun hardware and Solaris Operating Environment software. FastForward is Oracle`s Applications and Services turnkey offering designed to address the unique cost and timeframe requirements of mid-sized companies and divisions of larger companies.

FastForward enables companies to rapidly implement comprehensive business solutions at predictable costs.

Sun Enterprise servers provide an ideal platform for a variety of applications, including enterprise resource planning, electronic commerce, data warehousing and customer management systems. The powerful Sun Enterprise 3500 to 6500 midrange servers are the first in their class to offer data center-level RAS (reliability, availability, serviceability) capabilities with dynamic reconfiguration and alternate pathing for on-line repair and configuration, which minimise both planned and unplanned downtime.
