Sun shines on Acres of Love

Johannesburg, 16 Feb 2004

The 4th Annual Marathon of Golf challenge, organised by Sun Microsystems held in Cape Town, managed to raise R50 000 which was donated to Acres of Love.

Acres of Love is an HIV/AIDS and abandoned children's orphanage, that is committed to providing the best possible care, environment, education and medication needed for the children. The much needed donation is being used to cover the costs of the school fees and uniforms.

"We are so grateful to the Sun Microsystems team. Our children desperately needed uniforms and the donation came at the perfect time," says Marina Economou, Acres of Love, PRO / Administrator.

Sun challenged South African companies to take a day off to test their skills and endurance on the golf course. A total of 88 golfers completed three 18-hole rounds of golf in a single day, from sunrise till sunset.

"Sun Microsystems feels strongly about businesses making a difference to the fight against HIV/AIDS among children in our country," says Andre Muzerie, Sun Microsystems' Regional Manager for the coast.

"Sun realised there is a problem in the country regarding funding for privately owned NGOs. We believe in giving people a chance even if it's just making a difference in one person's life. Aids is close to our hearts as we are also involved in aiding the Medical Research Council regarding its AIDS/HIV portal," says Muzerie.

"We want our community not only to see us from a technological point of view but as a company that cares and gives back to its community. This year we saw Acres of Love as one of the many charities that deserve as much support as possible, "Muzerie concludes
