Sun Microsystems' entry-level StorEdge 3510 and 6320 arrays have taken top marks for price/performance in the Storage Performance Council (SPC) vendor-independent audited and certified benchmark tests.
One test demonstrated that the StorEdge 3510 Fibre Channel (FC) system delivered 17% more performance and 33% more price-performance with 30% less storage than its nearest competitor.
The measurement was obtained on an entry-level Sun StorEdge 3510 FC system, in conjunction with a Sun Fire 6800 server and delivered *11,049.60 SPC-1 Inputs/ Outputs Per Second (IOPS).
The Sun StorEdge 3510 FC array provides a compact, affordable, expandable storage solution that's simple to deploy and easy to manage, says Kobus Landsberg, systems engineer specialising in storage at Sun Microsystems SA.
"Designed to support growing storage requirements, the high-density array scales from 36GB to 146GB, and its building-block approach reduces costs and simplifies future upgrades to entry-level SANs," he adds.
The latest test result comes just months after another SPC test confirmed that the Sun StorEdge 6320 system delivered 46% more performance than any competing mid-range storage system. This measurement was achieved on a Sun StorEdge 6320 system, in conjunction with a Sun Fire 4800 server and delivered *44,805.74 SPC-1 IOPS.
The SPC tested both the 12-controller and 22-controller Sun StorEdge 6320 systems, which demonstrated that Sun has achieved linear scalability for this system in both price and performance. The 12-controller system delivered price per IOPS of *$15.40 while the 22-controller system delivered *$15.56 -- an increase of only 1%.
Full configuration details as well as results can be found at the SPC Web site: http://www.storageperformance.org/results.html
The SPC-1 test results showed the Sun StorEdge 3510 performed at 11,049.60 SPC-1 IOPS, SPC-1 price-performance of $7.95/SPC-1 IOPS and total ASU Capacity of 644.20GB (data protection level of mirrored). The SPC Audit Certification Identifier is A00021.
The SPC-1 test results showed the 22-controller Sun StorEdge 6320 system performed at 44,805.74 SPC-1 IOPS, SPC-1 price-performance of $15.56/SPC-1 IOPS and total ASU capacity of 3,275.980GP (data protection level of mirrored). The SPC Audit Certification Identifier is 13.
The SPC-1 test results showed the 12-controller Sun StorEdge 6320 system performed at 25,340.29 SPC-1 IOPS, SPC-1 price-performance of $15.40/SPC-1 IOPS and total ASU capacity of 1,960.13GB (data protection level of mirrored). The SPC Audit Certification Identifier is 11.
