Sun Microsystems and Sybase SA have teamed up to offer a cost-effective, high-performance data warehousing solution bundle for all companies ranging from small businesses through to enterprise-sized corporates.
The bundled solution comprises a Sun Fire Server together with Sybase IQ that suits the data volumes and queries required by clients. There are three options, beginning with an entry-level solution with a single CPU server, a medium-sized offering and on the high-end, an enterprise platform which can scale up to eight processors.
The Sun-Sybase initiative brings enterprise-strength business intelligence to organisations that could not previously afford the necessary investment. The commitment of Sun and Sybase to bring together the hardware and software components into a single bundle will help customers reduce risk and shorten time to implementation for a faster return on IT investment.
"Sun and Sybase have been co-operating for some time on a global scale, evinced by the fact that the largest data warehouse in the world runs on Sybase IQ and a Sun platform at the iForce centre in California," says Sybase SA marketing manager Julie Tomlinson.
This relationship reflects trends in the market (according to research firm Data Mirror, there will be a 37% global rise in corporate investment in business intelligence solutions this year alone) and has resulted in this partnership to bring affordable business intelligence to the market.
Sybase's tight architectural integration with Sun technology gives the companies the assurance that the technology foundation of their data warehouses can meet their growth requirements in the future. The processing and analytical power required to convert internal data stores into business opportunities has been beyond the reach of many organisations, although this need is not limited to large companies.
"Compared to its competitors, the solution offers a lower entry point and unlimited scalability for smaller companies that want to store and analyse data for maximum profitability and efficiency," says Daryl Blundell, solutions sales manager at Sun Microsystems. "Most IT providers focus on the needs of the top 200 companies in the country, but there is a huge base of successful, smaller companies out there which also require enterprise solutions. What we are offering is a turnkey solution with the cost based on an utilisation model.
"It is of particular advantage to SMEs because they are not usually technology-driven companies. Our offering allows them to focus on their core business while implementing a solution that minimises the risk to them, yields a rapid ROI, and that they can start using immediately."
The Sun-Sybase solution is based on Sybase's IQ analytical engine and Sun Fire V480 and V880 server platforms. Sun's new generation of four and eight-CPU Sun Fire servers is designed to support highly scalable, business-critical applications. Enterprise server processing power is delivered through the combination of Sybase's data compression and smart indexing technologies and Sun's latest Sun Fire servers, which are powered by 64-bit 900MHz UltraSPARC III processors, Sun Fire Plane Interconnect technology, and expanded memory capacity.
Blundell adds: "This solution is the direct result of the strong working relationships established to allow Sun and its partners to collaborate to address customer business issues."
