Huawei's svelte Ascend P6 has landed on South African shores.
Speaking at the launch event in Sandton last night, Huawei executives highlighted three features: the handset's slim build, the improved Emotion user interface, and the P6's front- and-rear-facing cameras.
Clement Wong, global go-to-market director at Huawei Device, described the P6 as the "slimmest smartphone in the world", measuring 6.18mm and weighing 120g. According to Wong, the device's shape and design were inspired by something that most people use every day - paper.
The flagship smartphone of the Huawei Ascend P series houses a 5MP front-facing camera with auto facial-enhancing capabilities and an 8MP rear-facing back-illuminated sensor camera, which enables 1 080 progressive full HD video recording and playback. The P6's IMAGESmart software allows for contrast and colour enhancement, auto scene recognition and object tracing focus.
According to the Chinese company, the Ascend P6 is intended to challenge the likes of Samsung and Apple, current market leaders. When showcasing the handset's cameras, Wong compared images captured with the P6 to those taken with an iPhone 5 and Samsung's Galaxy S4.
Huawei's Emotion UI allows users to customise home screens and themes, provides easy access to regularly used applications and quick search functionality, said Wong. The Multi-screen AirSharing feature makes content sharing easier, while also enhancing gaming, he added.
Featuring a 4.7-inch HD in-cell LCD with the brand's "MagicTouch" screen technology, individuals can use the P6 while wearing gloves. The device's 1.5GHz quad-core processor is backed up by 2GB RAM and 8GB ROM, with a microSD card up to 32GB.

The Ascend P6 runs on Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 and is powered by a 2000mAh battery, with Huawei's QPC and ADRX battery optimisation and power saving technology, which the brand says will enhance battery life by more than 30%.
"This launch forms part of our aim to keep South Africa connected to the rest of the world," said Peter Hu, MD of Huawei Device for the Eastern and Southern Africa region, at the event. Hu went on to say it also affirms Huawei's commitment to the African continent.
The Ascend P6 is available in black and white, with a pink version of the handset due before the end of the year. The unit is currently available in MTN stores, and will be available through Cell C and Vodacom in September. The Ascend P6 is expected to retail for just under R6 000.
