Surge protection for Ethernet, ISDN lines

For more than 90 years DEHN has been serving the electrical industry. From the beginning, protecting buildings and personnel from the effects of direct lightning strikes, to its current business of protecting electrical equipment and systems from the consequences of lightning currents and voltage surges.

Surge protection devices are used to protect instrumentation, power lines and data communication systems from induced surges and transient voltages.

Today's modern process control and high-speed communication systems rely on very sensitive high performance electronic components. The resulting surges and transients conducted on signal, communication and power cables can have a significant impact on operations, causing production downtime and high repair and/or maintenance costs.

Sources of electrical surges are numerous and varied. The most common is a nearby lightning strike, which will affect nearby data lines through induction.

Industrial transients are also significant because they are man-made disturbances caused by switching and commuting of electrical motors. The operation of such devices can cause abrupt shifts in the ground potential that can generate a current flow through a nearby data-line in order to equalise the ground potential.

Electrostatic discharge is another form of an electrical surge that can be included in this group. Although often overlooked, electrostatic discharge can potentially be a very harmful transient to fragile data equipment. It occurs due to two non-conducting materials rubbing together, causing electrons to transfer from one material to another. This is very common in South Africa with our dry winters.

DEHN's NET Protector surge arresters protect switches, hubs and telecommunication systems such as Ethernet, E1 and ISDN lines against surges. The 19-inch enclosure is equipped with up to three eight-way surge protection boards and only requires the space of one vertical module for 24-ports.

NET Protector modules are normally installed in the 19-inch cabinet, which houses the hub or switch. They are inserted as a patch panel with surge protection, or as a retrofitted device for patching between the patch panel and the device to be protected.

The NET Protector with its completely shielded 19-inch enclosure and its 4TP panel allows Class D networks to be established according to EN 50173 Gigabit Ehternet. The modules are also capable of protecting Ethernet 100 Base T/TX/T4, ATM 155 Mbit/s, 100VG-Any-LAN, CDDI, 10 Base-T (IEEE 802.3) and EURO-ISDN.

The protective boards not only provide a different protective circuit, but also a different connection. The unit has RJ45 connectors on both input and output and is supplied with 1m fly leads as standard.

Only 1U in height with a depth of 80mm, the NET Protector surge protection modules are available in eight, 16 and 24-way formats, and are fitted with eight-way shielded connectors. The NET Protectors offer a 155Mbps data transmission rate and a response time of < 1ns.
