Sweeping China`s broadband market - Huawei wins additional large chunk from China Unicom

Johannesburg, 11 Jul 2001

As China Unicom`s broadband metro networks expand, Huawei wins two further bidding for restructuring its metro networks in Jiangsu province covering 13 cities as well as its metropolitan network in Beijing, the capital of China.

According to statistics, Phase I of China Unicom`s broadband construction covers 102 cities within its 28 provincial affiliates, of which Huawei succeeded in the bidding for 58 cities scattered over 19 provinces, 16 of them being provincial capital cities. The total value of the nation-wide project is over US$20 million.

With Huawei`s innovative dual-plane switching router (DPSR) technology, the deployment of Huawei`s broadband system allows service providers to bring more competitive tailor-made business opportunities for its established and emerging customers. The tailor-made services cover Internet access, Virtual Private Network (VPN), Video on Demand (VOD), long-distance education, PORTAL, IP-HOTEL, 201+ (a prepaid card service), bandwidth wholesale and others.

To date, Huawei`s broadband metro network has hit it big on the metropolitan networks of Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, which has led to an all-out breakthrough and application of Huawei`s broadband products in the backbone layer, the converging layer and the access layer of China Unicom`s metro networks.

Huawei has already deployed and operated its proven broadband systems in the coastal provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian in the east and the inland province of Gansu in the west, where the nation-wide campaign "economic development of the western provinces" will dramatically boost the regional telecom infrastructure.

Huawei scored this big success through fierce competition against 12 local and global competitors in the market.

These recent contract wins further underscore Huawei`s position as a highly competitive supplier of broadband products in China`s competitive broadband market and elsewhere.
