South African software development house and solutions company, Swisttech, has announced its end-to-end total operator management system (TOMP), Helios, which it aims to market to local and international teleco companies.
As telecommunications service providers continue to hunt for new revenue streams, many companies are placing significant emphasis on the modernisation of their infrastructure. However, Swisttech believes this can only be achieved through greater efficiency of operational systems and a move from silo-based to multi-based operational support systems (OSS) and business support systems (BSS).
“There is an urgency among telecom companies to focus on new services to avoid becoming pure bit pipe providers. This means optimising average revenue per user and in order to do this you need to make sure (at the outset) that you know everything there is about each user,” explains Yanesh Ramiah, MD of Swisttech.
The Swisttech offering, which has already been through multiple iterations at Swisttech client, Vodacom, is now ready for international launch, and Ramiah says the company will be targeting global telco companies, many of whom are struggling to survive the competitive environment.
Helios can easily process more than 2.5 billion call data records per day from multiple data streams and in different formats. This is done in real-time and in parallel, eliminating single points of failure. It also allows for near real-time fraud detection, which monitors pattern deviation, profile monitoring, abnormal subscriber activity, among others.
This allows telcos to quickly act against fraudulent activity, which not only means good compliance, but also makes for solid business risk mitigation. The technology to accomplish this was designed by Swisttech and has been built to easily apply third-party BI products to the detail and summarised data. The architecture is SOA-based, allowing interfacing and integration to happen in a layered format with minimum configurability required from existing and new systems interacting with Helios.
The attraction of opting for a single service aggregator also means that telcos can centralise accountability - which in itself is a powerful draw card.
“Emerging technologies being employed by telcos such as mobile broadband, IP multimedia subsystems and an all-IP drive means that telco companies are being forced to modernise their OSS. Fluid and real-time customer experience management has also seen a big investment in centralised BSS,” Ramiah explains. “Helios will streamline all of these in a modern converged network.”
Swisttech prides itself in developing solutions that are truly technology agnostic, which allows it to easily integrate with a telco's existing operating platforms and applications.
