Sybase adds muscle to BlackBerry with broader access to applications

Johannesburg, 12 Apr 2005

Enterprise infrastructure and mobile software provider Sybase plans to extend its support for the Research In Motion (RIM) BlackBerry wireless platform in its iAnywhere mobile product portfolio.

With these enhancements, companies already using BlackBerry for their e-mail will be able to enable access to other line-of-business applications, such as sales force automation and field service. In addition, with enhanced RIM support in Sybase's mobile management software, organisations will be able to securely manage BlackBerry devices and applications as a part of their overall mobility strategy.

"Companies are realising that it's not enough to simply build and deploy mobile applications. It's equally important to have a full-scale solution to manage and secure vital company information on those mobile devices and applications," says Gerard Sofianos, manager of Sybase SA's Unwired Practice. "Sybase's leadership in the mobile enterprise software market provides companies with open, reliable solutions that will make BlackBerry an even stronger platform."

Today's organisations want to maximise their device investments to ensure they can address the complete range of mobile worker needs, from e-mail to enterprise applications. Sybase's extended support for BlackBerry will enable users to leverage their devices beyond e-mail. Mobile workers in a variety of industries, such as legal, finance and insurance, will be able to use BlackBerry devices to access and update critical information, improving productivity and return on investment.

"Sybase's enhanced support of BlackBerry in its management software will solve an important IT challenge - the secure deployment and support of BlackBerry devices and applications as a part of an overall mobile management strategy, which may include other mobile platforms," says Sofianos.

For example, organisations will be able to leverage Sybase iAnywhere open management software to perform asset management, content and software deployment, configuration management and automation and security management for all of their mobile devices. Sybase iAnywhere technology supports the broadest range of devices, platforms and operating systems.

Customers are already benefiting from BlackBerry support in the Sybase mobile portfolio, further extending the use of BlackBerry devices beyond e-mail to line-of-business applications. For example, Veritext, the US's second largest national provider of court reporting services, uses Sybase iAnywhere technology to provide Web and e-mail access via BlackBerry to corporate and law firm transcripts, making it easier for attorneys and corporate users to find the information they need, when they need it.

"Attorneys love the competitive advantage that they gain by having always-on connectivity with quick access to transcript information with VIP21," says Lolly Bak, CIO at Veritext. "Sybase iAnywhere technology powers BlackBerry users to search their transcript database on-the-go, finding key words located in any of their transcripts securely and quickly - in the courtroom, travelling to client meetings and preparing for litigation."
