Sybase (NYSE: SY), a leading provider of enterprise infrastructure and mobile software, today announced Chairman, CEO and President John Chen received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2007 Award in the technology and software category, in northern California.
The award recognises outstanding entrepreneurs who are building and leading dynamic, growing businesses. Chen was selected by an independent panel of judges, and the award was presented at an Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year gala event at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco on 29 June.
"Ernst & Young is honoured to recognise extraordinary business leaders, such as John Chen, and the companies they have built," said Rick Fezell, the award programme director for northern California. "Being named an Entrepreneur of the Year is not only about where companies are; it is about adapting. John Chen has shown his capacity as a visionary for innovation."
The Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards programme, in its 21st year, continues to honour entrepreneurs who have demonstrated excellence in areas such as innovation, financial performance and personal commitment to their businesses and communities.
"I am gratefully honoured to receive such recognition from Ernst & Young's selection committee," said John Chen. "This recognition does not merely belong to myself, but reflects on the concerted efforts of all Sybase employees and partners."
"The last 10 years has been the most rewarding time for me, driving Sybase's turnaround to a leader in enterprise mobility and keeping its competitive edge," added Chen.
"As an entrepreneur, I believe in knowing your strength, having a vision of the area of potential growth and committing to it. An entrepreneur's success relies on integrity with all aspects of business, including customers, partners, employees, investors and the press."
As a northern California award winner, John Chen is now eligible for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2007 national programme. Award recipients in several national categories, as well as the overall national award recipient, will be announced at the annual awards gala in Palm Springs, California on 17 November. The overall national winner will be announced at the world event in Monte Carlo.
