Sybase eases portal deployment with EP 5.0

Johannesburg, 23 Jan 2003

Sybase SA has announced the general availability of its ready-to-deploy Sybase Enterprise Portal (EP) 5.0. Over the past two months, beta clients have successfully tested EP 5.0 and affirmed that Sybase has made portal deployment easier and more affordable.

Gartner has named Sybase as enterprise portal leader for the second year in this year's portal product Magic Quadrant. According to Gartner, leaders are vendors who are performing well in the current economy, have a clear vision of market direction and are actively building competencies to sustain top position in the market.

Now packaged in three editions geared to deliver the best price/performance for each market segment, EP 5.0 helps lower total cost of ownership of portal projects with support for multiple application servers, greater ease of use, increased security, and integrated development, deployment, management and monitoring.

"Sybase Enterprise Portal 5.0 has helped us take a leap forward with our portal," says Craig Jacoby, Glatfelter Insurance Group. "Our organisation is widely distributed, offering insurance, risk management and non-insurance services across eight brands. EP 5.0's ease of access to legacy systems provides information across the business very quickly. Also, we are able to present a consistent and personalised interface to both our internal and external users."

By reducing the complexity of portal projects, EP 5.0 helps lower development, deployment, maintenance and support costs. EP 5.0 Portal Studio allows users with little technical background to build even the most complex portlet, using a point-and-click interface with easy access to templates, catalogues and all information sources, including Web, JSP, XML, HTML and databases.

Constructing a portlet manually with other vendors' software can involve significant programming, depending on information complexity. Portal Studio includes comprehensive workflow, versioning, search and filter capabilities for easy maintenance. It simplifies deployment of portlets to multiple portals and allows multinational corporations to host several language pages in one instance of the software. The resulting speed, reliability and flexibility deliver substantial cost and time saving to Sybase portal customers.

"Sybase EP 5.0 simplifies portals for business end-users, developers and administrators," says Julie Tomlinson, sales and marketing manager at Sybase SA. "With its tiered packaging and pricing, customers can start with a smaller-scale project that delivers value quickly, and then migrate seamlessly to greater portal functionality as their needs grow."

The EP 5.0 Portal Framework adds improved overall ease of use, openness and security. Patent-pending capture technology enables end-users to identify and select content from Web sources, and add it to their personal portal view. A redesigned and internationalised graphical user interface is easier to use and includes a drag-and-drop layout, parallel portlet loading, and comprehensive personalisation. The result is a richer, and more productive, user experience with enhanced collaboration and presentation capabilities. The Portal Framework architecture allows simplified scaling by adding portlet servers, binding portlets to specific servers, and deploying to servlets engines or application servers.

"This combination of superior price/performance per market segment and the best technology means Sybase can offer a lower TCO and greater user productivity than other portal suppliers," says Tomlinson. "In particular, powerful portlet capabilities provide business end-users access to information they need to do business without a great deal of IT intervention. As a result, a Sybase portal can be up and running in days and customised in weeks."
