Sybase has joined the WiFi Alliance, a non-profit organisation formed to consolidate wireless LAN standards. This underscores the company's commitment to the fast-growing WiFi market.
Sybase, the world's leading provider of software for the unwired enterprise, has deepened its involvement in the WiFi market and taken an active role in the establishment of industry-wide standards and product interoperability. As one of the first enterprise software providers to join the alliance, Sybase's membership highlights the importance of software and hardware in enabling successful WiFi solutions.
"Most people think hardware when they hear WiFi, but innovative infrastructure and application software are equally important to making WiFi work at an enterprise level," says Tahzier Isaacs, marketing manager at Sybase South Africa.
"Enterprise applications that are not designed for challenges such as intermittent network access, limited device battery power and frequent security issues will not be successful - no matter how sophisticated the hardware. Based on our leadership in mobile database and middleware technology, we plan to collaborate with other members of the WiFi Alliance to help solve the challenges inherent in WiFi networks."
"In becoming a member of the WiFi Alliance, Sybase joins a growing list of companies representing a broad range of industries from around the world that are committed to delivering software and hardware products that support WiFi certified products," says Frank Hanzlik, MD of the WiFi Alliance.
"WiFi certification allows products to be deployed more rapidly, used in many different venues, and support the growth of several new industry segments."
With its iAnywhere Solutions subsidiary and recent acquisition of AvantGo, Sybase is the recognised leader in the mobile database and mobile middleware markets and offers the world's largest mobile Internet service.
Its iAnywhere Solutions' "always available" architecture ensures that business-critical information can be accessed regardless of network availability. Once the mobile worker re-enters a coverage area such as a wireless LAN or hot spot, updates can be synchronised with the back-end systems.
The WiFi Alliance is a non-profit international association formed in 1999 to certify interoperability of wireless LAN products based on IEEE 802.11 specification. Currently, the WiFi Alliance has 194 member companies from around the world, and 799 products have received WiFi certification since it began in March 2000. The goal of the WiFi Alliance's members is to enhance the user experience through product interoperability. To learn more about the WiFi Alliance, visit http://www.wi-fi.organ.
