Sybase offers up to 25% off on V9.5 of modelling tool PowerDesigner

Johannesburg, 08 Oct 2002

PowerDesigner, Sybase's data modelling tool, has moved into the emerging market of UML with the latest version of PowerDesigner version 9.5, which comes with full support for all UML diagrams and support for the creation of UML profiles.

"We're encouraging companies to invest in PowerDesigner because it removes the obstacles that stand in the way of effective development projects," says Albert Nel, PowerDesigner product manager at Sybase SA. "It enables companies to build or re-engineer business applications quickly, cost-effectively, and consistently, regardless of different skill sets, multiple platforms, and the plethora of development languages that exist in most enterprises. This keeps users focused on business needs throughout the development process-from system analysis and design, down to generating the code for the application itself."

With a focus on remaining the "all in one modelling tool", PowerDesigner offers integrated support for data modelling, object oriented modelling and business process modelling. It supports most leading languages including Java, C++, C#, XML, WSDL, VB, VB.Net, PowerBuilder, IDL-CORBA, and Java-JSR109.

Support for reverse engineering of XML, PowerBuilder and Java is also available, and with support for roundtrip engineering, PowerDesigner gives users the opportunity to use any IDE that they feel comfortable with. Object relational mapping between object and data models keeps the data model and object model in sync.

PowerDesigner 9.5 features new business process modelling capabilities, enhanced UML-based object modelling, and supports both traditional and emerging modelling techniques within one graphically rich environment. Nel says this cuts the time and complexity out of development projects that span multiple platform and code types. "PowerDesigner also features a true enterprise repository for storing and managing all modelling and design information across the enterprise-to minimise inconsistencies and dramatically improve developer productivity."

The product's key new features include:

* Business process modelling: PowerDesigner empowers non-IT users to design and model business processes in real business terms using a simple and highly graphical non-technical model. Support for generation and reverse engineering of ebXML code is included.

* Data modelling: PowerDesigner designs and generates the database schema through true bi-level (conceptual and physical) relational database based-based on proven methods. PowerDesigner also supports data warehouse specific based techniques.

* Object-based: PowerDesigner completes analysis and design using standard UML techniques (use case, activity, sequence, class, and component diagrams). From a class diagram, PowerDesigner automatically generates and reverse engineers code for popular target environments such as Java (including EJB 2.0), XML, Web Services, C++, PowerBuilder, Visual Basic and more through a customisable generator.

* Enterprise repository: PowerDesigner's Enterprise version adds the value of the enterprise-class repository. The repository allows easy viewing and sharing of models and other information for all members of your team. The repository is highly scalable with support for role-based security, version control, search, and reporting capabilities.
