Sybase SA aligns business analysis, IT with new training offering

Johannesburg, 29 May 2006

Sybase SA, a leading provider of enterprise infrastructure and mobile software, has expanded its certified training offering with the launch of its Rapid Track Application Design and Architecture course.

The Rapid Track covers the soft and hard skills required for equipping business executives and system analysts with the expertise to effectively identify the business needs of clients and stakeholders, to help match IT solutions to business challenges.

"The business analyst is a key facilitator within an organisation, acting as a bridge between the client, stakeholders and the solution team; this is why it is relevant to align business with IT," says Arn'el Taute, Sybase SA's Training Manager.

Upon completion of the Rapid Track course, Taute says delegates will have an excellent understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a business analyst, as well as an understanding of systems analysis, the impact of quality assurance and the ability to use business process modelling techniques.

The course provides a holistic set of skills, relevant for business executives, business analysts, project mangers, IT managers, system administrators, IT managers and system architects and ideal for developers looking to extend their career paths. "Delegates also gain practical experience with regard to communication techniques and presentation skills."

The Rapid Track consists of three modules. BA101 - Business Analysis Skills focuses on soft skills and provides sample practical simulations to consolidate the material being learnt. BA102 - Introduction to Unified Modelling Language (UML) introduces the basic components of the Unified Modelling Language (UML), the tool that is used to achieve optimum communication between all parties who have a vested interest in any IT project.

BA103 - Advanced Aspects - focuses more on the advanced technical aspects of UML to ensure the design of a solid system.

The package can be split into two categories. The business track is BA 101 and BA102. The technical track consists of BA101 and BA103. The courses are each five days in length; however, delegates have six months to complete all the courses.

Taute says the Rapid Track complements Sybase SA's Analysis & Design training offering and goes well with its PowerDesigner designing tool, although Taute stresses that the new courses are not focused on any specific designing tool.

The driving force behind developing this unique Rapid Track was the fact that there is currently a gap in the market when it comes to non-product specific business analysis and UML courses. "The majority of courses that are currently on offer all use a specific tool set," she explains. "There was a need for something that was completely tool independent and uncluttered with sales messages. There is also no course offered in business analysis that prepares a person to be able to effectively communicate with the necessary soft skills that are so crucial in the BA profession."

Taute points out that there is no leaning to any technology but purely a focus on what business analysis is and how to apply it in a practical "hands on way" in the field. "The course also offers sufficient knowledge to be able to decide what tool would best suit the student's environment," she adds.
