A total of 24 Sybase technology partners have been named 2005 Computerworld Honours Laureates and awarded a Medal of Achievement. The programme recognises organisations that are leading the global IT revolution.
Included on the list of Sybase Laureates from around the world was South African company The Courier and Freight Group (CFG), a subsidiary of the South African Post Office and the country's biggest courier and freight company.
"The Computerworld Honours Medal of Achievement is presented annually to men and women around the world who have made outstanding progress for society through the visionary use of information technology," says Patrick J McGovern, chairman of the Computerworld Honours Chairmen's Committee and founder of International Data Group.
Sybase Laureates submitted case studies detailing extraordinary solutions using Sybase technology in each of the following categories: Business; Education; Environment/Energy; Agriculture; Finance/Insurance/Real Estate; Government/Non-profit; Transport; Manufacturing; Medicine; and Science.
"The Sybase Laureates continue an outstanding tradition of IT innovation in which service to real people doing important work in the world takes precedence over anything else," says executive director Daniel Morrow.
CFG implemented an enterprise-wide end-to-end mobile solution that has enabled more efficient invoicing from a mobile electronic proof-of-delivery (EPOD) system in its parcel courier division, XPS.
"Our inclusion in this programme is testimony to the ground-breaking work we have done with Sybase SA," says Earl Jaftha, IT manager at CFG.
Julie Tomlinson, sales and marketing manager at Sybase SA, says: "It is a great honour for a local company to be included in the programme and for Sybase's technology solution to be recognised through the naming of CFG as a laureate."
Case studies provided by the Sybase Laureates will be made available to scholars and the general public online and through a programme affiliated with 179 universities, libraries and research institutions in 27 countries. The 2005 Collection will be archived and serve as primary source material for scholars and as a resource for IT professionals interested in building solutions that benefit society. Sybase customers and partners have contributed nearly 250 case studies to the archive since it was established in 1988.
The Laureates from all divisions were recognised during a special medal ceremony on April 3, in San Francisco, marking the donation of their case studies and other historic materials to the world's libraries.
In June, Laureates deemed most outstanding by a panel of distinguished judges will be given special recognition as Worldwide Finalists in ceremonies in Washington, DC. One Worldwide Finalist from each field will be selected for a 21st Century Achievement Award.
Sybase SA is the sole African representative of Sybase Inc (USA), one of the largest global independent software companies, and has offices across the continent. Sybase's open architecture solutions provide the data management and mobility necessary to create the unwired enterprise.
The company has three solutions focused "practices": The Data Management Practice, The Business Intelligence Practice and The Unwired Practice, each mandated to assist in converting technology into holistic, end-to-end solutions that meet specific business needs. The practices offer a solid combination of technology know-how and business area expertise.
