Sybase secures Embarcadero agency for Africa

Johannesburg, 21 Jun 2004

Enterprise infrastructure company Sybase Africa has entered into a partnership agreement with Embarcadero Technologies, a Nasdaq-listed provider of data lifecycle management solutions, in terms of which Sybase will distribute and support Embarcadero's products throughout Africa.

Robert Oliphant, VP, international operations at Embarcadero, says the company has already established successful relationships with a number of Sybase offices around the world. The appointment of Sybase as a distributor is based on the company's proven expertise in providing high-level support and service for its customers over a period of 14 years, as well as its ability to cater to customers across the African continent.

"We know from experience that the business fit between our two companies is very close," Oliphant says. "We have the same view on customer service and the same focus on selling solutions rather than point products.

"This partnership is a very good fit that will benefit both companies' customers," adds Oliphant. "Sybase has always been a critical, core platform for Embarcadero and our customers." Embarcadero products, such as Embarcadero DBArtisan, work seamlessly with Sybase's core database offerings and other major database platforms. With Embarcadero, Sybase customers will be able to extend their expertise across multiple database platforms and operating systems, increasing their productivity and the performance of their systems.

"Data management solutions today often consist of multiple database technologies, making an independent data management tool such as Embarcadero a compelling product," says Alan Cowley, CEO of Sybase Africa. "Our customers will now experience the benefits of adopting a portfolio of data lifecycle management solutions from a single vendor, which results in greater efficiency in managing their environments."

Embarcadero customers, which include 97 of the Fortune 100 companies, rely on the company's high-performance solutions to manage ever increasing amounts of data and ensure optimal performance of complex, multi-platform applications and systems. Its products are aimed at removing complexity, improving productivity, compressing timeframes, and increasing database performance and availability.

"Sybase will help Embarcadero to focus on bringing to market a broad range of solutions that were not as readily available to them in the past," said Oliphant. "The agreement will enable us to partner with a market leader in Africa to deliver customers not only a database or application, but also performance, availability, modelling, and testing solutions that help them to maximise their IT investment."

For local Embarcadero customers, the partnership will mean an improved level of service in terms of technical support and sales issues, as a result of Sybase's large staff complement. The partnership will also raise Embarcadero's profile in the market, as Sybase will be in a position to provide opportunities for customers to meet salespeople and technical experts when required, and to view new software at events and seminars.

Sybase customers, in turn, will be better supported through a "one-stop-shop" for database and application solutions and management tools. Customers wishing to move to Sybase from other databases will have access to the Embarcadero tools and skills set to achieve this.

* A team of representatives from Embarcadero Europe will visit SA to launch the partnership at an event to be held at the Johannesburg Country Club in Woodmead. Interested parties should contact Lucy Price on (011) 804 3740 or e-mail lucy@sybase.co.za for further information.
