Sybase SA has released details of its latest version of PowerDesigner 7.5, which it claims is the first single tool that allows data and object modelling techniques.
According to Julie Tomlinson, marketing manager at Sybase SA, the company plans to compete directly with Rational Rose and Computer Associates' ERWin tools.
PowerDesigner 7.5 encompasses UML-class diagram modelling and an enhanced repository for refined enterprise modelling. Several users can simultaneously store and share design information in a full-featured repository, which makes it much easier for users across the enterprise to collaborate on multiple application design projects.
"PowerDesigner 7.5 presents a much simpler and easier-to-use version of UML compared to Rational Rose, while offering more powerful features than the data modeling tools offered by Computer Associates," says Tomlinson.
Features include:
Application/business logic/persistence design using the UML class diagram
Generate and reverse engineer Java and XML
Data modeling for all major relational databases
With the new repository option, PowerDesigner 7.5 also features:
A centralised, robust, enterprise-class repository, able to be stored in the most popular ODBC-compliant relational databases
The ability to define permissions and access rights for users and groups
A consolidation and extraction mechanism to detect and manage conflicts
Versioning at the object level
Storage, management and versioning of any PowerDesigner model at the object level, as well as for any Windows document.
Sybase has planned a series of demonstrations in South Africa to enterprise analysts, designers, DBAs, developers and project managers over the next month. For further details contact Lucy Channing at lucy@sybase.co.za or Tel: (011) 804-3740
