Symmetricom acquisition an advantage to local IT and Telecoms market

Johannesburg, 10 May 2000

"The acquisition of Hewlett Packard's Communications Synchronisation division (CommSync) by Symmetricom offers a number of advantages to the local IT and telecommunications market", says Delio Senatore of Grintek Telecom, Symmetricom's authorised southern African distributor. "Symmetricom is a leading supplier of advanced synchronisation and timing solutions and, by acquiring HP's division, gains a product set that complements its own technology."

"Network timing is seen as the next growth market in the telecommunications sector. Without it, quality degrades, transmissions fail, faxes miss several lines, calls are dropped and wireless communication becomes a nightmare. With the rapid growth of the local cellular communications market and the emergence of WAP technologies in South Africa, network synchronisation is becoming more important and will find even more applications in new, high bandwidth applications such as packet networking, digital television, cable telephony and voice-over-IP."

Adds "Grintek Telecom will now be able to offer a new range of leading edge wireline and wireless timing products, such as HP's OSMF and SmartClock, in addition to Symmetricom's existing range of timing systems which includes BesTime and the TimeSource product range."
