South African Breweries International has engaged Synergy Computing to deploy Cognos' award-winning business intelligent software in a number of African countries.

In announcing the deal worth more than R1,6m Derek Kemp, SAB's IT manager (Africa), said SAB realised the need to have easy access to meaningful information.

"Having considered all the major players in the market carefully, we are convinced that the speed, accuracy and ease of use of Cognos' software combined with the experience of a partner like Synergy will enable our users to have critical information available at the click of a button.

"We asked Synergy Computing to partner us on this project as they have a wealth of experience in the deployment of solutions, not only in South Africa but in the rest of the continent," he said.

Kemp said consolidated sales information is critical to their business and management constantly need information to make key marketing and distribution decisions.

Although quick and efficient reporting was a key requirement, SAB also identified the need to display in a way that is easily understood.

SAB will now be able to analyse consolidated sales information to identify trends and have a solid foundation for future decisionmaking.

The implementation of the project got underway at the Kalagadi Brewery in Gaborone, Botswana this month. Once completed the roll out will be extended to an additional 16 breweries in Swaziland, Mozambique, Uganda, Lesotho, Kenya and Tanzania.

"Having done business intelligence training and consulting in Africa for organisations like UNICEF and British American Tobacco before we are delighted to tackle a project of this scale for a customer as prestigious as SAB," said Synergy director, Paul Howard.
