Synergy Computing, the 23-year-old business intelligence (BI) systems specialist, is priming itself to further meet corporate SA's competitive need to make greater sense of the volumes of data now generated by business computing systems.
Newly appointed managing director, Andrew Connold, is planning to increase the company's staff complement by nearly 20% as part of the company's drive to service this rapidly-growing market need and enhance Synergy's leading role in the BI field.
"SA companies have lagged the rest of the world in their adoption of BI and data warehousing technologies to date, but, now that they have their back-end ERP (enterprise resource planning) systems in place and have started to implement their customer-facing solutions, they realise BI is a must to maintain their competitive-edge," he says.
"You have to be able to make sense of all the data that's generated internally and externally, if you really want to get to know your business and your customers. BI tools are the only way to do it today."
In addition to building its business on its strong existing customer base, Connold is looking for new business to account for 25% of business growth in the year ahead.
"We have a very strong and growing team of professionals with a depth of data analysis, BI and data warehousing skills built up over more than 20 years to meet this demand," he says.
"It's expertise backed by the best-of-breed products and solutions - from the BI solutions from Cognos, which is recognised as a global leader in this field, to key tools such as the data extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) tools from industry-leader Datastage."
Connold, who was appointed managing director in June, trained as an electronics engineer and has a BComm. He worked for six years with Siemens before moving to Plessey, where he spent 12 years rising through various executive positions to managing director of Plessey Cellular. For the past two years he has run his own business Synergy, which is headquartered in Johannesburg with branches in Cape Town and Durban, was recently acquired by Dale Investments and JLP Properties, two privately held investment companies.
"Andrew Connold's appointment will enhance an already strong team and demonstrates the board's intention to grow Synergy into one of the strongest independent software companies in southern Africa," says Robert Engels, chairman of Synergy.
