Synergy reports Mitel outpaces competition in enterprise IP telephony in Q2

Johannesburg, 31 Aug 2005

According to a recently published report from Synergy Research Group, Mitel, a leading provider of Internet Protocol (IP) communications solutions, has outpaced its competitors in enterprise IP telephony sales in the second quarter of 2005.

The report, from one of the market`s leading research firms, also indicates that Mitel maintained its market-leading position in the small and medium business segment.

According to Synergy`s report titled "Q2 2005 Enterprise Voice Market Shares", Mitel enterprise IP telephony sales grew 20% sequentially, faster than the growth rates of Avaya, Cisco and Nortel in the past calendar quarter. This was driven by strong sales of Mitel`s LAN telephony call server shipments, which grew 46% sequentially, a growth rate that topped Cisco`s and Nortel`s by over 30 and 40 percentage points, respectively.

"Mitel`s continued and significant investment in the development of our solutions is yielding strong results in the marketplace," said Don Smith, CEO of Mitel. "Companies implementing Mitel`s IP Communications solutions represent a range of industries of all sizes. Our introduction in July of Release 6 of the 3300 ICP is the most significant increase in our addressable market to date and allows us to continue the momentum we are experiencing particularly in larger enterprises."

According to Andy Bull, local director for Mitel South Africa, the company is experiencing similar levels of growth in the South African IP telephony market.

"Demand for our solutions locally is at all time high, with the quarter ending July 2005 being a record one for the local office."

The Mitel 3300 ICP can now scale down to 10 users and up to 65 000 while simultaneously functioning as both an IP-PBX and an applications and services gateway (ASG), allowing interoperability with the Microsoft Live Communications Server (LCS) and related applications. The 3300 ICP delivers enhanced network management, increased security and supports new innovative IP desktop devices.

Mitel continues to maintain its market leadership in the small and medium business market (SMB), as confirmed in Synergy`s latest market share findings. According to the Synergy report, the company`s Q2 sales in the low and mid-tier markets were in excess of four of its competitors combined: 3Com, Shoretel, Sphere and Vertical.

"Mitel is unique in that they architected their IP telephony solution from scratch, allowing them to combine the best of both worlds, taking full advantage of an IP solution with the heritage and well established experience of Mitel`s traditional PBX and KTS solutions," Jeremy Duke, President and CEO, Synergy Research Group. "Mitel`s strong market performance in Q2 shows they continue to be successful bringing sophisticated IP telephony solutions to market and building upon a strong market share position in the small and medium business space."
