To help IT departments deliver better and more effective internal support, St Bernard Software has introduced a support tool, System Activity Manager, that allows help desk staff to view system activity that led up to a crash or system problem.
System Activity Manager (SAM) provides a journal of the system activity occurring on a workstation or server - such as file names and actions, log-ons, applications running, connections and printing activities. Support staff can use this information to help determine which activity caused a machine to crash, reducing the frustration to both network administrators and end- users by taking the guesswork out of what caused the system to go down.
By implementing SAM on workstations throughout the organisation, the help desk department will see immediate benefits:
- Save time and expense by not requiring help desk staff to go to individual workstations to investigate problems, reducing travel and phone time.
- More information to help solve users` problems, especially when users can`t recall precise actions they were performing before problems surfaced.
- Increased response time and lower resolve time delays.
- Auditing tool to increase the level of security an organisation has over critical and confidential data.
- Help for remote and travelling users whose computers are not in the main office.
Paul Mason, Vice President of IDC`s Infrastructure Software Market ResearchGroup, notes: "St Bernard Software has established an excellent reputation for coming to the rescue of LAN administrators.
Their new System Activity Manager is consistent with that focus. If St Bernard Software do for help desk and support organisations what they did for data management, customers will be well served."
System Activity Manager is due for release in the fourth quarter. It will initially include support for NT servers, NT workstations and WIN9x desktops.
St Bernard products are represented in South Africa by Server Tools.
