Demonstrating that Africa is becoming a market of more significance for European and North American communications providers, Gateway Communications and T-Systems have signed a major agreement.

The agreement will expand T-Systems` reach into the African continent, via Gateway`s existing pan-African , while the deal will also allow Gateway`s customers a global reach, through T-Systems` international network.

"Our relationship with Gateway reflects T-Systems` ongoing commitment to provide quality solutions to our global customers and our commitment to the African market," says Francis Wong, executive VP for Western Europe and Africa of T-Systems` carrier division, International Carrier Sales & Solutions (ICSS).

"With the growth of GSM networks, deregulation and new technology, Africa remains a highly complex and fragmented, yet ultimately significant communications market."

He says his organisation will now be able to deliver cost-effective voice and services for carrier customers to the region, via Gateway`s extensive network.

"This is particularly significant in areas where T-Systems does not maintain direct bi-lateral relationships, so we will now work together to deliver new value-added services to African service providers, such as roaming and international data services," says Wong.

He says that through Gateway`s established interconnect relationships with PTTs, cellular operators and competitive carriers across Africa, ICSS will be able to offer reliable, high-quality international calling services in the region, including locations where T-Systems does not maintain a network presence.

"This agreement is a unique opportunity for us to provide Gateway Communications` customers with global reach via T-Systems` international network," says Peter Gbedemah, CEO of Gateway.

"The agreement also further demonstrates our strategy of delivering high-quality, cost-effective international services into Africa, leveraging our extensive pan-regional communications network."
