Take control of your own Web site

Johannesburg, 08 Feb 2010

So you've just started a new company, with the ultimate goal to become a household name more well known than Microsoft, more successful than Donald Trump, with more benefits than Hugh Hefner...

The next step on your road to success, and a very important one, I might add, is the marketing of your business. Where is the most obvious place a prospective client would start searching for a service provider? Phone book? That's what Noah used to find building material for the Ark. Yellow Pages? Too heavy to carry. Phone a friend? Ask the audience? The answer is easy - the Internet! The Internet, World Wide Web, Google... same place, different pseudonyms!

The point I am trying to make is that your company needs a Web site! Seeing that this is the only thing standing between you and your first million, I'm sure you'll agree that you want a Web site that's fast to develop and easy to maintain?

The biggest problems companies are experiencing with their Web sites are that the content on the sites are often out-of-date or inaccurate, it's difficult to find things, updating the site is complex, and the appearance is becoming dated. Worse yet, you make use of a Web developer who has 200 other clients and your updates are at the bottom of his e-mail inbox. Thankfully, these problems are what a content management system is specifically designed to solve.

More and more people are realising the value of CMS (content management systems) to develop their Web sites. A content management system is software that keeps track of every piece of content (text, images, music, documents, forms etc) on your Web site, almost like a local public library keeps track of books and stores them. This means that you are in full control of your Web site. You can edit text, upload photos etc - no more paying a developer R500 per hour or waiting two weeks for your site to be updated. The power lies at your fingertips! A CMS can be as easy or as complicated as you want it to be and is therefore perfect for the individual with no programming or Internet background, but also for the highly skilled Web developer, utilising the most up-to-date tools available for Web designing.

The Joomla software is easy to install and set up, even if you're not an advanced user. A “WYSIWYG” (what you see is what you get) editor allows you to easily create and edit your site without the knowledge of HTML. Some of the features on Joomla include: Web indexing, RSS feeds, printable versions of pages, newsflashes, blogs, forums, polls, calendars, Web site searching and much more!

The name “Joomla” is a phonetic spelling of the Swahili word "jumla" meaning "all together" or "as a whole".

Tailormade4you is presenting a hands-on course to learn Joomla, on 20 February, in Johannesburg. To learn how to use Joomla to quickly and easily build your own Web site, read more about it and make an online booking on http://www.tm4y.co.za/intro-to-joomla.html.
