Traditionally, there's been a perception of CIOs simply as executors of an IT agenda devised by the board. IT has been seen as a mere support function, not a strategic driver.
A recent CIO magazine survey shows that as little as 13% of executives see IT as a business leader, and a mere 30% view IT as a partner - two figures that are deeply disappointing to the CIO, especially when you consider just how much of a central role IT plays in the modern business.
But, these days, 'traditional' doesn't cut it anymore. The digital revolution - driven by disruptive technologies, innovative new business models, newly empowered customers, and the growing influence of shadow IT in the enterprise - has placed technology firmly at the heart of the business.
