Each year as part of its corporate social responsibility programme, Leaders Unlimited holds its annual soiree, Talent Unlimited, which involves the Buskaid Soweto String Ensemble and results in a major donation to its Charitable Trust.
"This year`s event, recently held at the Johannesburg Country Club, was as usual, immensely successful," commented Lesley Mawhinney, head of the ICT practice at Leaders Unlimited. "Unlike previous occasions, this year`s event was held as a `thank you`, to its clients, partners, family and friends.
Buskaid was founded in the UK in 1992 by British viola player Rosemary Nalden in response to a BBC programme highlighting the difficulties besetting a string project in Diepkloof, Soweto. Nalden enlisted the support of 120 distinguished professional musicians who took part in a simultaneous fundraising `Busk` at 16 British railway stations.
In 1997, Nalden moved to SA to establish the Buskaid Soweto String project (BSSP), formed from the younger members of the original project.
Overwhelmed by requests from local youngsters, the BSSP, which was originally based in a tiny run-down church office, moved in May 1999 to its own purpose-built music school in Diepkloof.
This school now offers specialised tuition to some 80 young people aged between four and 23. However, Buskaid has been forced to turn away over 1 000 potential students through the lack of resources, and has now implemented a teacher-training scheme for its senior students. Also newly established is its `in-house` instrument repair workshop run by Sonja Bass, offering skills training to local youth.
