Tally line printers have once again shown their dominance of the South African high-speed impact printer market by ending up far ahead of their rivals in 2002.
"The BMI-TechKnowledge/ IDC South Africa Printer Forecast and Analysis Report, 2002-2007 high-speed printer report for 2002 puts Tally well in the lead with 37.8% of the line printers sold and a value share of 39.6% of the total South African market," says Loretta Pein, BMI-T senior analyst, peripherals. "TallyCom shipped a total of 147 line printers valued at R9.86 million during the year."
The total market for line printers (also referred to as high-speed impact printers) in 2002 was 389 units valued at R24.88 million and includes line character and line matrix printers. Large businesses are by far the biggest users of these printers, consuming over 62% of all the systems sold locally.
David Terry, GM of TallyCom, the sole importer of Tally printers to the South African market, says the main customers for high-speed printers in SA are financial institutions, retail and distribution concerns and manufacturing companies.
"Line printers are a specialised field requiring very reliable technology that can handle heavy workloads over a long lifespan," says Terry. "Tally has remained at the top of its game over the years and in 2002 once again managed to soundly outpace the second- and third-placed player in the South African market.
The high-speed market is not immune to change, however, and BMI-T/ IDC has noted a small, but significant shift away from impact printers.
"We won`t see the end of line printers for quite some time," Terry says, "but Tally has already noted customers` needs and launched a range of high-speed non-impact printers earlier this year. We expect to see substantial gains in this market in the near future."
