Tarsus aims to spread IBM`s self-management technology plan

Johannesburg, 12 Jul 2002

Tarsus Technologies, the value-add distribution arm of JSE-listed MB Technologies, has thrown its weight behind IBM`s promotion of self-management technology through Project eLiza. Distribution is on the cards for the release of new software.

IBM announced last month that it has begun a new phase in its efforts to achieve autonomic computing. Plans are underway for the release of software that balances work across many computers.

"Autonomic computing is an approach to self-managed computing systems with minimal human interference. The term comes from the body`s autonomic nervous system, which controls key functions without conscious awareness or involvement," explains Drikus van der Walt, IBM product manager at Tarsus Technologies.

IBM`s Project eLiza is about using technology to manage technology. It is an ongoing effort to create servers that respond to unexpected capacity demands and system glitches without human intervention. The main function of the project is to bolster operating performance across eServers - available locally from Tarsus Technologies - and computers dynamically, and as though they were on one system.

The goal: higher reliability, availability and serviceability, and lower downtime and cost of ownership.

The software, scheduled for release later this year, is known as Enterprise Workload Manager and it governs not just single servers but groups of servers, monitoring the machines and automatically shifting work among them.

According to Van der Walt, selected customers will be trying out the workload management software later this year. It will be more freely available on mainframes and Unix, Windows and Linux servers from next year.

Project eLiza`s self-management focus is manifested differently within each IBM family, according to the unique demands placed on each server group.

eLiza on IBM xSeries: xSeries includes a rich portfolio of simply smart managed tools designed to fulfil the eLiza promise of self-managing systems.

eLiza on IBM eServer pSeries: pSeries offers some of the most advanced self-management features for Unix servers.

eLiza on IBM eServers iSeries: Provides one of the industry`s broadest portfolios of eLiza capability and is setting a standard for server management with OS/400 Version 5.

eLiza on IBM eServer zSeries: zSeries offers some of the most advanced self healing and optimisation features available.

"We are confident that Project eLiza will introduce measurable value to business. Cost of ownership and efficiency remain issues of concern. The promotion of software and self-management technology is an exciting chapter in the convergence of business and IT," concludes Van der Walt.
