Tarsus announces two Compaq entry-level ProLiant family servers

Johannesburg, 27 Jul 2001

Tarsus Technologies, a member of JSE-listed MB Technologies, has announced Compaq`s ProLiant ML370 and DL380 servers -- next-generation platforms that provide effective and affordable performance, an excellent set-up routine, and good manageability.

According to Terence Barter, Compaq product manager at Tarsus, the ProLiant ML370 and DL380 servers have everything built in that users could want at an affordable price. "Both products have the cutting-edge technology that Compaq is known for, with the bonus of their proven reliability and support."

"The ML370 is the latest in a long line of extremely reliable servers from Compaq. Based on the very popular Proliant 1600, the ML370 is the industry`s most versatile two-way rack or tower server," Barter continues. "Having a range of processor speeds available, the ML370 is ideal for remote sites and corporate data centres."

The ProLiant ML370 offers advanced memory protection and high availability features. "Delivering more configuration possibilities than its predecessor, the new ProLiant ML370 now offers hot plug redundant fans, 1+ 1 hot plug redundant power supplies, hot plug PCI slots, and multiple tool-free racking solutions."

Powered by Intel Pentium III processors, with 512K cache, up to 6GB of 2:1 interleaved 133MHz ECC SDRAM, and 64it/66MHz PCI slots, the ProLiant ML370 offers unprecedented performance levels.

"The ProLiant DL380 enables users to do more with less. The brand new chassis provides better performance, increased uptime, and easier ownership than the previous model, not to mention any other 2-way dense rack server in the industry," Barter points out.

The next-generation ProLiant DL380 is the first 2U server offering robust high availability features, including hot plug redundant disk drives, power supplies and fans. Online Spare Memory and hot plug PCI slots, give customers the ability to provide higher levels of uptime to their end-users.

"The ProLiant DL380`s reengineered, modular, space-saving design, coupled with Compaq`s advanced deployment and management tools, makes it quick and easy to deploy and manage, allowing IT staff to spend more time meeting customer needs and less time managing servers," he says.

The DL380 is the only 2U server providing the exceptional performance necessary for today`s most demanding web and database applications, with the latest Intel Pentium III processors, expanded memory support, improved system architecture, and next-generation embedded array controller.

In addition, the DL380 is 33% smaller than its predecessor, enabling customers to put more computing power in less space.

"All in all, this server is great for medium to small businesses. It can be useful in several different functions, for instance, as a small database server, mail server, file and print server, or a Web server," Barter explains.

He concludes: "The added configuration flexibility, enhanced chassis design, and additional availability features have resulted in highly versatile servers that are ideal for a myriad of business scenarios."

Tarsus Technologies

Tarsus Technologies is the distribution arm of MB Technologies Limited -- a company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and one of SA`s leading IT groups.

The founding company of the group, Tarsus Technologies, was established in 1985 by Leo Baxter, and was involved in the development and sale of software before diversifying into hardware distribution.

In 1989 Baxter sold a majority share to M+PD Electronics, which was subsequently sold to Siltek. In the early 1990s, Tarsus expanded its hardware sales, and was appointed distributor for OKI, Samsung and Compaq. In 1992, Baxter bought back Tarsus, selling a majority share to Persetel, and in 1994 he took advantage of an opportunity for a management buyout and repurchased the company with Mike McGrath acquiring an equal share.

The company was now growing strongly, and MB Technologies was formed as a holding company to cater for the group expanding and diversifying its operations into new areas.

Today, Tarsus Technologies is one of SA`s leading hardware distributors and widely recognised by the channel for its service ethos, product knowledge, excellent support and channel focus.

With an executive board comprising Mike McGrath (the founder of M+PD and past MD of Siltek), Leo Baxter, Guy Whitcroft, Pierre Spies, and Jamie Scott, Tarsus` management team is arguably the most experienced IT distribution team of any company in the country.
