Tarsus helps Samsung grow into leading monitor brand in SA

Johannesburg, 13 Nov 2003

The Samsung range of SyncMaster monitors has posted strong gains in its share of SA`s monitor market in the first half of 2003, establishing itself as the country`s leading monitor brand, according to a new report from BMI-TechKnowledge.

The report attributes Samsung`s strong performance in the first half of 2003 to its strong involvement in the corporate sector, its strategy of bundling its high-quality products with locally assembled PCs from companies like Tarsus, and its relationships with the channel.

Says Mark Campbell, Samsung general manager at Tarsus Technologies: "Tarsus has worked closely with Samsung on their SyncMaster range of monitors for over 10 years. This has helped Samsung grow its share of the South African monitor market.

"Due to the excellent quality and value of Samsung`s products, its excellent reputation in the corporate market and aggressive marketing, we have seen substantial growth in the first six months of 2003, compared to the same period last year."

Campbell says Samsung`s strategy of bringing to market a versatile and stylish range of products that match the needs of a broad range of consumers and business users, has paid off for the vendor.

"Samsung is the trendsetter in the monitor world today, with products that offer low power consumption, compact and lightweight form factors, sleek designs and bright, razor-sharp images," adds Campbell.

BMI-T`s South African PC Monitor Forecast Analysis 2002 - 2007 shows that Samsung has moved from the number four position in 2002, to second place in the first half of 2003 in the overall monitor category. This has placed Samsung as the highest-selling international brand in the South African monitor market for the first half of 2003, commanding 13.8% of new sales in this period.

During the first six months of 2003, Samsung delivered a record 46 177 units compared to the 44 893 units for the full year of 2002. According to BMI-T, Samsung is now also the country`s number one supplier of standalone monitors, growing its share of new unit sales from 25% in this category in 2002, to 31.7% in the first half of 2003.
