Tarsus releases HP`s first AMD-based desktop in South Africa

Johannesburg, 03 May 2006

Tarsus Technologies has announced the mass availability of the first AMD-based desktop computer to come out of HP locally, since the company merged with Compaq four years ago.

"This is great news for both SMBs and corporates alike," says Jason McMillan, HP Product Manager at Tarsus, "as it gives buyers a desktop that is configured somewhat better than a conventional entry-level offering, but at an entry-level price point."

McMillan says this move is further testimony to the fact that HP`s relationship with AMD has been growing in strength over the past two years.

"For quite some time, the only AMD-based offerings available from HP were in the server space," he says. "Then last year, HP made a foray into AMD-based notebooks with the local release of the NX6125. This year, it`s the desktop`s turn with the release of the new AMD processor-based DX5150."

McMillan says beyond `more value for money`, the DX5150 marks the formation of a new market space for HP. "The price/performance delta is extremely attractive on this new machine and while buyers would have only been able to afford an Intel Celeron-based desktop before, now they can gain access to a Athlon XP processor with additional RAM and other great extras.

"This release opens up a space directly in between the entry-level and middle of the road market, but at an entry-level price. We`re confident it`s going to be a winner," he enthuses.

He says AMD has a proven and stable platform in the Athlon XP and the fact that we are able to offer a P4 equivalent at such an attractive price point bodes well for sales.

The DX5150 is also bundled with a one-year on-site warranty, a combo optical drive (DVD-ROM/CD-R) standard and 512MB of RAM.

"With the extra budget headroom this machine affords, we believe it could even become a strong challenger to the price break above it. Users can now choose to bundle a monitor, more memory and a larger hard disk with the DX5150 and come out with a solution that`s potentially loaded with more features than an expensive desktop.

"From R3 999, including VAT, the DX5150 is definitely an attractive deal," he concludes.
