Tarsus takes the smallest multi-processor servers to market

Johannesburg, 18 Mar 2003

Continuing its policy of providing only best-of-breed products to the channel, Tarsus has announced the availability of the latest ProLiant servers from HP, the DL560 and DL740.

"Our commitment to the ProLiant range reflects the popularity of these servers in the channel and with corporate users," says enterprise product manager Andre Wollheim.

Not merely a new server, HP continues to push the boundaries of reliable computing with the ProLiant DL740. It is the industry`s first server with Hot-Plug RAID Memory, as well as high levels of intelligent fault resilience, dynamic scalability and up to 8-way SMP performance to support enterprise solutions.

"Today`s business-critical applications demand ever-increasing scalability and availability from enterprise servers," Wollheim continues. "Space in enterprise-class data centres is becoming increasingly scarce, driving the requirement for servers that provide maximum performance from smaller footprints. The DL740 is perfect for an environment that has space restrictions, requires a lot of processing power and has a SAN or NAS device attached."

The ultra dense chassis design of the DL740 (4U high - or 4 golf balls high) optimises critical data centre space by providing enterprise class features within a modular form factor. With Intel Xeon processors running at 1.5GHz or 2.0GHz and fully implemented PCI-X I/O, the DL740 delivers the performance and uptime required to meet the current and future demands of the enterprise.

The Xeon processor further increases the speed of processing via its hyper-threading technology. Hyper-threading allows multi-threaded server applications to execute threads in parallel within each processor. Intel`s benchmark tests show some server applications can experience a 30% gain in performance.

The ProLiant DL560 is a smaller (2U) server, boasting 550W hot plug power supplies, up to 4-way Intel Xeon Processors with L3 integrated cache (and hyper-threading), embedded Smart Array 5i Plus controller (dual channel wide Ultra3) that supports up to 64MB write cache, RAID (0, 1, 1+0) across internal hard disk drives, as well as redundant ROM. As with the ProLiant DL740, the DL560 space saving design makes it an ideal platform for consolidating older technology servers and Web applications onto few new, servers.

The DL560 does not support Hot-Plug RAID memory, but does offer customers Advanced Memory Protection Technology. Wollheim says this is an online spare memory bank to which data is transferred when another bank encounters a fault. Users therefore lose no data from memory and can ensure their processing continues uninterrupted.

Wollheim notes that Tarsus has been selling ProLiant equipment since the technology`s introduction seven years ago and is the first distributor to go to market with the new range of HP products.
