TCM, an infrastructure and service provider, participated in the provision of 34 houses in Stretford, Orange Farm. TCM, in conjunction with ABSA and 20 other suppliers, managed to raise R3 million in funds. The build took place from 20 to 24 October 2008 with all sponsoring companies providing employees who volunteered to assist with various building activities.
This project, which TCM participates in annually, is run by Habitat For Humanity, an organisation which works with poverty-stricken communities and corporates to directly address the housing shortage in South Africa. Habitat For Humanity has a number of requirements in selecting beneficiaries, one being that every beneficiary must have previously assisted in the building of a house for a member of their community. This ensures the longevity of all the projects Habitat For Humanity initiates.
Habitat For Humanity also states that all sponsors must provide 10 to 15 volunteers from within their companies for each day of the build. TCM, a service-centric company had 30 volunteers who were present at the building site throughout the week of the build.
With increasing focus on social responsibility, TCM employees and prospective employees are able to gain insight into TCM's commitment and confidence in the future of South Africa and its citizens. Volunteers are also given an explicit view on the difference an individual and an organisation can make. TCM's contribution in providing a safe place for families who did not have running water and electricity displays the company's commitment to bettering the lives of all South African citizens.
In the handover ceremony, which took place on Friday, 24 October, and was attended by CEO's, corporate volunteers, community volunteers and beneficiaries, Gauteng Provincial Housing MEC, Nomvula Mokonyane urged beneficiaries and community members to participate with government and in projects like the ABSA and Habitat for Humanity Make a Difference Campaign to ensure that many more families and communities will benefit from the success of these initiatives.
TCM is proud to be part of an alliance with such an impact and will continue its affiliation with the organisation and its initiatives.
