TCM releases MIMIX dr1 for enhanced disaster recovery

Johannesburg, 21 May 2004

TCM has released MIMIX dr1 for IBM`s iSeries range of servers, a disaster recovery (DR) software solution that provides iSeries administrators with more-frequent recovery points than standard once-a-day tape backup procedures.

Users are able to run automated backups as regularly as required to a remote location. It will assist customers in improving the availability of their production machine by moving backups to the DR machine, reducing the offline window of their production system.

"It is an easy-to-use, self-installable software solution that provides administrators with better disaster recovery protection and automation without increased complexity or added resources," explained TCM marketing executive Jorge de Campos.

In a standard tape-backup system, an administrator takes a tape backup once a day via a normal backup operation, and transports it to an offsite DR facility. The data recovery point may be 24 to 48 hours old, and the typical restore-from-tape process is lengthy and labour-intensive.

With MIMIX dr1, administrators can automatically achieve snapshots as often as every 30 minutes, depending on transaction volumes, and automatically send those snapshots to a remote DR server. By capturing more snapshots per day, businesses can significantly accelerate their ability to recover information assets following data loss.

Administrators use a point-and-click interface to identify where the snapshot should reside, and MIMIX dr1 automates the replication procedure. Changes to data and objects are sent to a remote server, and a built-in Recovery Point Detector captures the snapshot images without pausing the server or applications.

"The real breakthrough is being able to provide a simple solution for this emerging marketplace without requiring the use of journaling," explained De Campos. "MIMIX dr1 is a non-journaled solution. Many iSeries customers today rely heavily on a daily save-to-tape paradigm.

"What we are hearing from customers is a need for an availability policy that transparently provides multiple recovery points per day, so they can recover to a point less than 24 hours old. They are also looking for ways to simplify the overall recovery process, especially during the intensity of a disaster recovery situation," he explained.

With increasing attention focused on the value of data and application assets, businesses worldwide are re-examining and reprioritising their disaster recovery options. Many find themselves challenged by the global economic downturn. Existing options, such as daily tape backups, may not provide adequate coverage for their information assets.

In the event of a disaster, MIMIX dr1 allows customers to focus more on recovering the information assets of their businesses within a shortened recovery time.

It provides a more-aggressive availability strategy than standard tape-backup, allowing customers to improve their disaster recovery implementations.
