Tech4Africa, an annual technology conference that focuses on mobile, the Web and emerging technology in Africa, is, for the first time, hosting a "hackathon" on day one.
The dedicated developer day will run on 31 October and will include practical advice on topics like agility and big data running alongside workshops on Ruby on Rails, Android, Mxit, Windows 8, and (still to be finalised) iOS.
"[The hackathon] is to focus more on the needs of people executing projects, building their skills and exposure to technical topics; instead of high-level talks," says Tech4Africa founder Gareth Knight.
He says the aim is to broaden exposure and experience, give people a place to learn and network, and to celebrate success.
Start-ups can enter their scalable, "investable" projects that offer solutions to African problems into a pitch contest. They will gather advice and coaching from Ignite and a number of mentors (from IBM, AngelHub, Invenfin and Deloitte Digital) during the developer day. Five finalists will be able to pitch their start-ups at the conference on day two.
The successful start-up will win R25 000 prize money from Deloitte.
Knight says the new format of the conference is in response to delegate feedback from the past two years.
