Technology speeds up insurance claims

Johannesburg, 11 Jul 2002

Short-term insurer Mutual & Federal expects to halve the time taken to process claims through its motor recoveries division after implementing a process and workflow system.

The insurer recently appointed The IQ Business Group as its technology to assist in implementing its e-process strategy in the claims area.

The first phase of the strategy will be the implementation of the FileNET system within the motor recoveries department, whose administration is among the most paper-intensive in the company. The system, labelled Motrec, is designed to automate all facets of the department`s claims handling process.

Mutual & Federal IT GM Ian Williamson says the group expects significant month-on-month savings in motor claims as a result of the system because most processes can be performed in tandem, rather than sequentially as before.

The motor recoveries section processes about 18 000 claims annually in Johannesburg, the cost of which is expected to be halved.

"Our goal ultimately is to eliminate the need for the manual , handling and filing of physical paper and other documents that support the claims process within the department," he says.

The IQ group has a track record with former short-term insurer Commercial & General Union (CGU), which was brought into the Mutual & Federal stable 18 months ago.

"While CGU utilised FileNET`s imaging module only, Mutual & Federal will use this component and extend the system`s architecture to include workflow and process automation as well," Williamson says.

Mutual & Federal also plans to deploy e-process to other departments using the reusable components that were developed for the Motrec workflow system.
