Telcos call for network convergence

Sprint Nextel and its WiMax partner, Clearwire, indicated they might move to long-term evolution (LTE) in the future, states PC World.

Clearwire CEO Bill Morrow calls for convergence between networks using the two 4G technologies. He adds service providers should allow for roaming between LTE and WiMax networks, using devices that can connect to both.

Chip maker Beceem Communications rolled out a chip last month that includes both WiMax and LTE capability.

Nintendo reveals 3D gaming device

Nintendo is set to release a 3D version of its DS handheld portable gaming device, reports PC World.

The Nintendo 3DS will allow users to play games in 3D without wearing 3D glasses; it is expected to be rolled out in March next year.

Nintendo confirmed the device will be showcased at the gaming conference E3 in June.

LTE mobile phone coming

MetroPCS and Samsung have signed a deal to jointly roll out the first LTE mobile phone in the US, due in the second half of 2010, says PC Mag.

LTE is the global 4G technology which is expected to replace 3G for Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile in the coming years.

"MetroPCS will be building a network in the Las Vegas metro area in the second half of this year and they will be partnering with Samsung for a complete solution," says Tom Jasny, Samsung's telecommunications America vice-president of and networks.
