Huawei Technologies, a leading global telecoms equipment provider, has been awarded a further contract for an access network expansion by Telecom Egypt, formerly ARENTO, which operates the largest telecoms network in Africa.
The second contract award best indicates that Huawei has won the solid trust from Telecom Egypt for its proven success through its industry-wide renowned HONET, a flexible and effective solution for access network.
To date, Huawei has totally deployed 180,000 subscriber lines of HONET on the networks of Telecom Egypt, providing high-quality integrated services such as voice, data, etc. for Egypt.
"The last large-scale commercial application debut of Huawei`s HONET access network has greatly improved the whole situation of the local area telecom network as promised. It has indeed helped us to find an effective way to solve the existing headaches like copper cable duct congestion, small & fixed coverage, limitations of services, etc", said a senior manager at Telecom Egypt.
In fact, Telecom Egypt became rest assured when they scored a significant commercial success after its first introduction of Huawei`s HONET on its local network. The previous contract had been signed following a long-time heavy-loaded running pilot project of the HONET system since early 1999 and on which the trial results had fully met the requirements of Telecom Egypt.
To address the specific market needs in Egypt, Huawei provides Telecom Egypt with its latest series products of OLT and ONU FO2A with 19-inch frames, which is technically compliant with the international standard. It helps meet the migration need from narrowband to broadband for its customers. Under the contract, Huawei offers three types of ONUs including 2000L, 3000L, 4000L in the whole system, taking account of diverse subscribers` distribution and various services needs.
In addition to the initial POTS service, Huawei`s HONET is able to deliver a broad array of services ranging from ISDN such as 2B+D, and 30B+D to broadband service, from ADSL to LAN in the light of changing needs in the market. Due to the adoption of the built-in transmission unit, Huawei`s equipment allows for simple, flexible, and economical network configuration as demanded by its customers. Besides, this built-in SDH supports complicated networking modes such as intersecting ring, tangent ring, ring-belt chain and others.
With Huawei`s access network equipment, the operator can better serve its end-users with enhanced service offerings. It allows them to enjoy better and affordable quality services provided by both PABX and other common telecoms networks.
Through Huawei`s scalable software-driven broadband modules, the operator is quickly enabled to operate broadband services based on the existing network legacy when they see fit.
This solution requires no additional investment to optimize the local telecoms network in Cairo and its neighboring areas while the operator`s incumbent network continues to function as ever.
Telecom Egypt, formerly Arab Republic of Egypt National Telecom Organization (ARENTO), is currently the only PSTN operator in Egypt. With up to 6 million fixed lines and a sales revenue of US $600 million in 1999 and US$ 1 billion in 2000, it is the largest telecom operator in Africa.
