Telecommunication companies are again ahead of the pack in the ICT sector, with Blue Label Telecoms, MTN and Telkom all rewarding their CEOs handsomely.
The 2009 Mabili Directors' Remuneration Report shows that, in 2008, CEOs of telecommunication companies earned the best in the ICT sector.
At the top of the earnings pile, according to the research, are the Blue Label Telecoms CEOs. Siblings Brett and Mark Levy scored R50.4 million and R49.5 million respectively, due to the cancellation of a pre-listing management bonus participation agreement.
Stripping this out, Brett Levy earned a salary of R6.8 million and a bonus of R3.36 million, taking his total salary to R10.4 million.
His brother, Mark, earned a salary of R5.9 million and a bonus of R3.36 million, taking his total salary, to R9.5 million.
MTN CEO Phuthuma Nhleko earned a basic salary of R6.5 million, and a bonus of R13 million, taking his total package for MTN's last financial year to R20 million.
Telkom CEO Reuben September earned a salary R2.5 million, and a bonus of R3 million. He also benefited from a restraint of trade agreement payment of R13 million, taking his total to R19 million.
IT winners
Montanana's dollar-denominated remuneration converts to a total package of R15.3 million, which is only slightly higher than Dimension Data CEO Brett Dawson’s dollar-denominated package, which converts to R14.3 million.
Montanana earned $2.2 million dollars, of which $1 million was his basic salary. Dawson earned $2 million, of which $626 000 was his basic salary and $610 000 was in a bonus payment.
Mabili indicates that the median total package for all executive directors in the IT industry amounts to R2 million. It bases this on a sample of three executive chairmen, 11 CEOs, nine CFOs, two divisional CEOs, and 20 executives.
The increase over last year's report is R100 000, with a median total package figure of R1.9 million for last year.
However, several CEOs in this sector earned above the median. One was Allied Technologies CEO Craig Venter, who earned a salary of R3.4 million, a bonus of R2.7 million, and his total package was R8.2 million.
GijimaAst CEO Robert Gumede earned a total of R7 million, of which R3.1 million was his basic salary. Retired Datacentrix CEO Gerhard Uys earned R5 million, of which R2 million was a bonus payment.
Vodacom was not included in the survey as the company listed on the JSE in May and the research is for the last financial year.
