TelePassport, Poynting sign GSM antenna splitter distribution agreement

Johannesburg, 23 Jun 2004

National LCR and communications solutions provider TelePassport has appointed Johannesburg-based Poynting Innovations as master distributor for the recently released eight-way GSM antenna splitter product. The splitter, nicknamed the "Octoboost", allows eight GSM devices to share a single antenna.

The eight-way splitter was designed and developed for TelePassport by Poynting, and boasts impressive electrical and RFI characteristics.

Initially a TelePassport exclusive product, TelePassport has decided to release it on the open market because, according to TelePassport managing director Anton Potgieter, "TelePassport`s business is built on our belief in freedom of competition and free and fair access to telecommunications. Although the Octoboost is a phenomenal differentiator and sets a new standard in professional LCR installations, we felt that it would be a contradiction if we reserved it just for our customers - therefore it is now freely available to our competitors. We are proud that we have been able to advance the local telecoms industry as a whole, and that everyone will benefit."

This antenna splitter is the first eight-way GSM splitter to be designed and developed locally in SA. "Splitters are available overseas, but at very expensive pricing, and not optimised for the African GSM market," comments Potgieter.

"We set out with Poynting to make an affordable unit which is suited to local conditions, and we have created a real winner with strong export possibilities. We are delighted to have Poynting`s experience and reputation behind the product distribution."

Antenna splitters are particularly applicable to least-cost routing and community phone shop installations, where multiple GSM fixed cellular terminals (FCTs) are used at a single site. The advantages of using splitters include cost savings from using fewer antennas, improved signal quality through reduced signal interference, and improved reception when a high gain antenna is used. (Poynting also supplies matched high gain antennas that complement the eight-way splitter perfectly.)

TelePassport supplies market-leading cost saving telecommunications solutions, and is actively involved in telecoms research and development on a full-time basis. Another market first is its "Genie Box" analogue least-cost routing switch, released earlier this year and showcased in March at the Cebit trade fair in Hanover, Germany.
