Telkom has confirmed a problem, that occurred during scheduled maintenance to its ADSL network, has been rectified, but says it will investigate the scripts, processes and underlying network control elements to establish the root cause and prevent future problems.
Telkom performed scheduled maintenance work to add new IP addresses to the ADSL network yesterday afternoon, and a problem took place straight after the start of the maintenance work, the company says in a statement.
The cause of the problem was not specified but Telkom states this resulted in all live ADSL sessions being reset.
"ADSL users would be accustomed to modem or session resets taking on average two minutes.
However, the high number of simultaneous reset attempts due to the problem put a significant load on authentication servers and thus the resets took longer than normal and were experienced by customers as downtime."
According to the statement, the company's immediate focus was on getting all systems back up and stabilised, which was done by 17:30 yesterday.
This was also confirmed with a few major ISPs, it said.
Telkom apologised to all its ADSL customers that experienced interruption to their services.
