Telkom appoints new board member

Johannesburg, 01 Jun 2007

The Telkom board has named Mark Lamberti as a non-executive director.

Lamberti's appointment follows a spate of resignations from the company's top senior executives over the last few months.

The fixed-line operator confirmed in March that its chief technical officer, Thami Msimango, and chief sales and marketing officer, Wally Beelders, had left the company to join part-owned subsidiary Vodacom.

In April, Telkom's CEO, Papi Molotsane, also walked out without an official explanation. Non-executive director Lazarus Zim left a week later, citing his involvement with the Afripalm and Mvela Resources empowerment transaction as the reason.

Other executives moved into positions at various partner companies. Telkom's chief of corporate affairs, Mandla Ngcobo, left the telecommunications giant to head subsidiary Telkom Media, and Justin Ramayia, an executive in Telkom SA's office, was appointed CEO of majority-held Nigerian telecoms operator Multi-links.

Lamberti's appointment took effect as of 29 May. Telkom says he will also take membership of the company's Audit and Management Committee and Human Resources Review and Remuneration Committee.

Lamberti is the outgoing CEO for Massmart, a managed portfolio of nine wholesale and retail chains which include Game, Makro and Dion.
