Telkom has entered into an agreement with the Lesotho Telecommunications Corporation which will see the South African national operator provide a R2,5m digital telecommunications system in the mountain kingdom.
The Martis DXX system will help Lesotho expand its digital capability to ten main centres throughout that country, a development which should please business and corporate customers who have been demanding access to more digital leased circuits.
As part of the deal Telkom will also provide training for Lesotho technicians.
"This is a mutually beneficial arrangement," says Nombulelo Moholi, Managing Executive for International and Special Market Services at Telkom.
"While various business institutions within Lesotho will benefit from the country-wide digital capability, our customers in South Africa will also be able to connect to businesses in various locations in Lesotho and not in Maseru only, said Moholi.
Moholi said the deal with Lesotho should be viewed in the context of broader bilateral and multi-lateral initiatives in the region, which are aimed at establishing a regional network infrastructure which would support reliable, effective, affordable and advanced telecommunications services in Southern Africa.
Taelo Khabele, acting Managing Director of the Lesotho Telecommunications Corporation, said Lesotho was experiencing ever growing demand for high-speed leased circuits of various bandwidth for the transmission of data between Lesotho and South Africa.
Some of the benefits of the new system will be efficient banking system to all major centres of Lesotho, efficient and up-to-date data transmission services, especially for the mining recruiting functions.
"Infrastructure will now also be available to support telemedicine applications and the provision of Internet services, to mention just a few examples," Khabele said.
