Telkom Business to partner Oracle with managed hosting services

By Telkom Business Integration Services
Johannesburg, 11 Jul 2003

Telkom Business will partner with Oracle South Africa to provide hosting services for Oracle software to the broad business community, ranging from large corporates to small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs).

Telkom will offer a managed infrastructure services platform, including hardware, network and support services to Oracle. In turn, Oracle will offer Oracle9i Database, Oracle9i Application Server and Oracle E-business Suite.

"Telkom`s Data Centre is one of the biggest in the country in terms of the number of applications supported and hosted," says Rikus Matthyser, Executive, Telkom Business Integration Services. "Data centres such as ours are not common in SA and in providing a data service we are leveraging our infrastructure investment to the benefit of our customers."

The Data Centre was recently expanded with the opening of Telkom`s National Business Solution Centre. The central design theme of this world-class facility is creating infrastructure with no single point of failure and redundant services to provide optimum reliability.

This is evident in the dual fibre and microwave network access links, redundant power feeds and UPS and advanced fire suppression systems. The centre has been designed to withstand any natural disaster and can run up to four days without external assistance or utility feeds. Integrated facilities management systems ensure the maximum security and reliability and the least amount of human intervention.

Telkom offers extensive hosting services either on a shared or dedicated hosting infrastructure basis. Telkom`s highly trained and experienced specialists are in a unique position to manage, monitor and maintain the customer services under their control in line with industry best practices, maximising the ultimate benefit to customers.

As part of Telkom`s Managed Infrastructure Hosting service, Telkom will manage:

* Installation, configuration and optimisation of hardware and OS platforms;

* Installation, configuration and optimisation of networking equipment;

* Selecting and allocating appropriate storage platforms;

* Procurement of backup devices, magnetic media and offsite storage of media;

* Advanced security, intrusion detection and anti-virus systems;

* The advanced Telkom hosting environment;

* Disaster recovery planning and platforms;

* Advanced support services, including operating system support, database support, etc; and

* Data and network architecture design services.

All the services offered are backed up by comprehensive service level agreements with penalties, where these are required.

By outsourcing the Managed Hosting requirements Oracle is better able to focus on its core business, while being ensured of added capacity by partnering with a key managed hosting provider such as Telkom.

"We also offer a single point of contact. This means that when customers outsource their requirements to Telkom or Oracle, we are able to resolve any problems within our organisation since all our internal processes have already been set up according to a single contact point model. This eliminates finger-pointing problems that are so common where there are areas of overlap," Matthyser said.
