The University of Fort Hare has announced that it will honour Telkom`s CEO, Sizwe Nxasana, by awarding him with an honorary doctorate for his contribution to the economic development of SA.
Nxasana, 46, will be awarded an honorary doctorate in Commerce at the University of Fort Hare, in Alice on Friday, 21 May. Among the dignitaries attending will be:
* Sibusiso Bhengu, Chancellor of the University of Fort Hare and a former minister of education
* Enoch Godongwana, Eastern Cape MEC for finance
* Mkangeli Matomela, Eastern Cape MEC for education
* Sam Kwelita, Eastern Cape MEC for Public Works
* Wiseman Nkuhlu, chairman of the NEPAD Steering Committee and former Economic Advisor to the President
* Andile Ngcaba, chairman designate of Dimension Data South Africa and former director-general of the Department of Communications
* Piyushi Koteccha, CEO of the South African University Vice Chancellor Association.
Nxasana is an alumni of the University of Fort Hare, having graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1979. Historically, Fort Hare has produced graduates from SA and as far north as Kenya and Uganda, many of whom went on to prominent careers in fields as diverse as politics, medicine, literature and art.
Nxasana is one of the few black chartered accountants in SA and has contributed significantly to the advancement of black accountants through his participation in the establishment of the Association of Black Accountants in South Africa (ABASA).
As the CEO of Telkom, Nxasana has transformed the company from a state- owned enterprise to a public-listed company on the JSE and the New York Stock Exchange. He is seen to be at the forefront of BEE initiatives and recently walked away with the 2004 `Most empowered company` award from the Financial Mail.
In addition, Nxasana has won the BBQ Black Businessman of the Year Award for 2002. In May 2003, the Sunday Times identified him as the "Leader of the Month" and the Black Business Council voted him one of SA`s Top Business personalities. Under his leadership, Telkom has recently been nominated as the Financial Mail`s Top Empowerment Company in a survey of 200 companies listed on the JSE Securities Exchange South Africa.
