Telkom doubles Internet access speed for its ISDN customers

Johannesburg, 15 Aug 2003

Telkom will tomorrow introduce Telkom Internet ISDN 128, a package that doubles the speed for Internet users with ISDN lines.

The package offers unlimited access to the Internet with no monthly cap or any other restrictions.

ISDN, which stands for integrated services digital network, is a digital dial-up service providing error-free transport for multimedia communication.

Up to now, Telkom Internet has offered a 64kbps Internet package. By utilising both digital 64kbps ports available on ISDN, the Internet access speed can be doubled to 128kbps.

This multi-link application greatly enhances the user`s Internet experience, and initiates two calls to the Internet service provider (ISP). The user is therefore charged for each call to the ISP.

Faan Kluyts, Telkom Internet Product Manager, said the 128kbps package included an e-mail account with five aliases, 24-hour technical support at local call rates and 5MB of personal Web space. Telkom also offers free virus protection and Webmail, which include a spam tool to control unwanted mail.

Current Telkom Internet ISDN users will have to upgrade to Telkom ISDN 128 if they wish to double their Internet access speed at a subscription fee of R189 per month billed on the telephone account with no necessity to sign a long-term contract.

A Telkom ISDN line is required to enjoy the speed and stability of access to the Internet.

"There are various options available which combine ordinary analogue telephone and fax facilities with the digital access to the ISP. An ISDN modem capable of handling 128kbps and the relevant drivers are also required. Modems come with software including the necessary drivers that are easy to install," said Kluyts.

Telkom offers free online support that is only a local call away. For more information, visit www.telkom.co.za or call 10219 to order.
