Fixed-line operator Telkom expects to have restored all services to the Yeoville area by the end of the month.
Services were disrupted when a gas explosion ripped through the area at the end of last month, injuring two people and destroying Telkom's building in the process.
The company, which has confirmed through an independent forensic investigation that the blast was gas-related, has already restored critical services, such as to the South African Police Services, through alternate links.
The damaged Yeoville exchange building is still inaccessible to Telkom as it has been declared unsafe by the Department of Labour. As an alternative, Telkom will build a containerised exchange in order to speed up service restoration initiatives.
In addition, radio coverage in the area is being expanded to offer additional voice options, and remaining services should be up and running by month-end, says Telkom.
A toll-free helpline has been established to advise affected Yeoville customers on their services. The helpline, which can be reached on 0801 31 31 31, is in operation every day from 8am to 9pm.
Affected customers are also offered a free mailbox and may contact the helpline to find out whether they qualify for call forwarding facilities, says Telkom.
