Telkom gets new consumer face

Johannesburg, 04 Nov 2009

Telkom's rush of new faces continues with the company's appointment of Manelisa Mavuso, who will become Telkom's senior managing executive for the consumer division in SA.

Telkom SA MD Pinky Moholi says Mavuso comes with an extensive marketing background, including tenures at companies like the Ogilvy Group, Levi Strauss, Nedbank and Standard .

“Manelisa has strong operational and leadership skills and has operated successfully in difficult and competitive environments. I have no doubt that he will be equally successful at Telkom SA,” she says.

Mavuso worked as deputy MD of the Ogilvy Group's Cape business and became the group's business director. He also had a seven-year career as the head of marketing for Levi Strauss SA, which Telkom says included a two-year secondment as head of marketing for the UK operations.

In August 2005, Mavuso headed up marketing for services at Nedbank. He was subsequently appointed as divisional director for marketing for the bank's retail division, in April 2006.

Earlier this year, Mavuso joined Standard Bank, in the role of director for marketing and communications in SA.

He will begin his tenure at Telkom next week.

As part of the company's restructuring plans, Telkom has made a spate of senior appointments, including that of Moholi, who now heads up the SA business unit.

The company also appointed Bashier Sallie as its senior managing executive for the wholesale and network division in August.

Telkom is still waiting for the finalisation of its top level appointment of former Cell C CEO Jeffrey Hedberg, who is bound by an exclusivity contract with the Oger Group until the end of this month. It is likely Hedberg will head off to Nigeria before Christmas to take over at Telkom's MultiLinks business.
